A few things are consistent in the Auto Glass Industry.
- Every owner complains that he doesn't make any money
- The shop bathroom is uncomfortably close to the CSR's desk
- Every shop has a technician nicknamed "Mugsy"
After nearly 20 years in this business we take comfort in the familiar.
We were more than a little uncomfortable when our industry changed overnight. Looking back, it is difficult to recall the exact date or year that it happened. It felt like one day it just was.
Globalization and Auto Glass Contamination
Seemingly overnight, distributors like Bartelstone began offering Windshields from around the world at discount prices. Auto Glass, as we knew it was changed forever.
With globalization came low prices. Some of the low price product was good and others-not so much. One unanticipated challenge was contamination. The cause was not always clear. Nevertheless it was a real problem.
Fortunately, it didn't take long for Dow Automotive Systems to identify a simple yet effective procedure to cure the serious issue.
Wet Scrub to the Rescue
The solution was simple. Cut a scotchbrite pad into a 1" x 1" square, liberally apply GC 800 to the surface, scrub, wipe and clean. Serious problem with a simple solution.
At the time, there was push back from "Old School" installers that didn't understand that our business had changed. Eventually, most came on board as they found there was serious consequence for failing to remove contamination
